Traditional Finn/Sami Shaman Drum

Crafted from Norwegian reindeer rawhide this viking drum follows traditional methods rooted in the spiritual and musical heritage of Northern Scandinavia. It is debated whether the Norse used drums in the viking age, considering historical records of viking drum use are scarce. However, we know confirmed about their their significance as instruments and spiritual tools by the neighboring Sami/Lapp people. These indigenous Northern Scandinavians, linguistically and culturally linked to Siberian cultures, used drums in rituals and ceremonies related to traditional Shamanism, and their traditions  hint at the drum’s role in Norse culture.

The outlawing of drums during Scandinavia’s Christianization suggests their profound connection to pre-Christian beliefs. These calf-hide drums come in three sizes, offering varying tones—larger drums produce deeper, resonant sounds, while smaller drums are lighter and more portable. Their natural calf rawhide creates a deeper tone compared to reindeer or goat-hide drums.
