Traditional Norse Drum

Crafted from goat rawhide from Norway, this viking drum follows traditional methods rooted in the spiritual and musical heritage of North Scandinavia. It is debated among scholars whether the Norse used drums in the viking age, considering archeological records of viking drum use are scarce. However, we know for sure about their their significance as instruments and spiritual tools by the neighboring Sami/Lapp people. These indigenous Northern Scandinavians, linguistically and culturally related to Siberian cultures, used drums in rituals and ceremonies similar to traditional Shamanism, and their traditions  hint at the drum’s role in Norse culture.

The outlawing of drums during Scandinavia’s Christianization suggests their profound connection to pre-Christian beliefs. These goat-hide drums come in two sizes, offering varying tones—larger drums produce deeper, resonant sounds, while smaller drums are lighter and more portable. Their natural goat rawhide creates a higher pitched tone compared to reindeer or calf-hide drums.
