Ring Pommel Sword (Ringknaufschwert)
This Germanic Ring Pommel Sword Replica, also known in German as a Ringknaufschwert, is a fully functional weapon inspired by a long tradition of ring-pommel swords used across Germanic and Northern European cultures. Designed for both combat and ceremony, the distinctive ring pommel was not only practical for balance and handling, but also deeply symbolic.
The ring pommel allows for more comfortable swinging and controlled wielding, improving wrist articulation and balance during strikes. Historically, ring pommel swords were also used for swearing oaths, reinforcing their role beyond the battlefield. (You can read more about oath-swearing swords in our linked blog post.) This sword is a replica inspired by late medieval German ring-pommel swords, while also honoring much older examples of the same concept, such as the Beckum ring-sword dated to the 5th century(Germany) and the Pevensey ring-pommel sword dated to the 3rd century(England). The tradition is even echoed in early Germanic literature — the Beowulf poem uses the term hring-mæl, meaning “ring-sword.”
These swords were sometimes adorned with bracelets or jewelry attached to the ring, transforming them into objects of status, ceremony, and religious or ritual significance. They were not merely weapons, but symbols of honor, oath-keeping, and authority.
Hand-forged in the Czech Republic by some of the world’s finest blacksmiths, this sword is fully functional and battle-ready, trusted by HEMA and Buhurt fighters for training and competition. It balances historical authenticity with modern performance standards, making it equally suitable for serious martial artists, reenactors, and collectors.
